Time flies... ;)

Koh Phra Thong,

24/02/07

I have been in Thailand on the island of Koh Phra Thong for over a month and a half now and time is speeding up. The interviews with the fishermen in the villages of Tapaioi (East coast) and Thung Dap (south end) went really well. I must thank MAP (Mangrove Action Projec) for their valuable help.

I was also able to go out with two fishermen, helping me understand  their life and interaction with our turtles. You will be able to follow our progress through the Naucrates website.

In Thung Dap I also had an insight on the sea gipsy community called "Moklen". I wish i can come back next year and learn lots from them including their conservation effort and their beautiful oral language. One of them is now  patrolling the second half of the southern beach bringing him and his wife a little income.

Our observations  from Hornbill hill has been good. We had both hawksbill and green turtle sightings, Our next step will be to study the food source available in this area.

Volunteers have been arriving steadily making our work easier and all of you know that without this workforce it would be difficult to achieve our goals.

I am sure you all want to know how our nesting beaches are going. Well I have to say that we have a single olive ridley nest on beach 3.

But our surveys of Koh Ra have brought us a big smile. We have a green turtles nest on beach 2. The most exiting news comes from  beach 1 (Koh Ra) : we have found a leatherback nest. They will both nest after our time here but they are safe and protected. More to come... I am sure :)

We have had a pleasant increase of French volunteers growing the impressive number of 4 of us.

During the month of March you will hear about the New Emma who just arrived. She will evaluate the state of the reef. Alessandra will be studying the presence of feeding areas near our observation point.

I must leave you because I am having a massage this afternoon.

B Good !! Lots of Love
