... Season and After season...21 turtles to
Glyfada
9th November 2007
Since I
have gotten so behind in many topics and issues I have decided to update
both October and November all together. Injured
turtles have just started to slow down and leaving us times to recover from
this really crazy crazy summer !
To start
we were having a staff meeting when I got a very special phone call from
somewhere in the Ionian sea : a New Arrival. But this
new one had a very unique twist. Mika, a juvenile loggerhead, was swimming
in the Ionian sea. The sea was pretty rough and he was was having a hard
time.
Arrives
this big wave...
Mika gets
pick up and thrown onto a ship. Not any ship, a tanker. There he is swept
away on the deck. He reaches an evacuation pipe and his back flipper sucked
onto it. Thankfully, Mikaealis, the onboard electrician from Bulgaria spots
him. Putting on his glasses he realizes that this object stuck on board is a
turtle. He picks it up and puts it in a barrel with some water.
This
creates some excitement on board. Many people of the crew gather around this
little creature. Every one want a picture with Mika.
But we
are taking care of 21 loggerheads and 1 green.
Dias, the
green, has been moved to the big tank. He seen very happy about that and we
will released him next week, on the 8th of October. Pavlouko should be with
him. Don't forget the 4th of October was the World Animal Day.
Amalia, a cute little loggerhead will be returned to the wild next today,
1st of October.
Volunteers
numbers are getting low : Lena, a returning German volunteer came back
for 2 weeks to work with us. Amanda and Catherine,
both from New York have joined us. Zoe went back to the UK.
Megan is here until the end of November. Andy (from Koroni) and the Mike
(from Chania) arrive to join the gang. Celine (from Kip, understand
Kipirassia) is residing at the center until she finds herself a job. She
needs to save money since she will be back next year as a monitoring leader.
This time of the year we have also long term volunteers from the
EVS program. They will be at the center until spring when you go off to the
beaches to join the summer programs.
Sotiria, one of our turtles, was released on a sunny day.
Safe travelling :)
Summer has finally decided to end and we stepped directly into winter.
Yesterday 8 Beaufort winds and massive waves invaded our sheltered
sanctuary. Crashing waves washed the whole seafront as winds hurled in every
location shaking the wagons and sweeping away every object not tied down.
The sun still shine every other day and lets us time to get on with the
treatments of our turtles.
Take Care,
B in touch ! B cool !
(AKA Pavlo)
B patient ! I will
put some new pictures soon :)
